The impact of El Nino is predicted to disrupt rice production this season. Availability of government rice reserves needed to anticipate the needs of staple foods.
According to Deputy Production Statistics Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Lumaksono, El Nino in October will affect rice production next year. "So, we have strengthened reserves at end of the year," said Adi, Thursday (06/08/2015).
Currently the reserve rice in Bulog warehouses there are about 1.5 million tons. Whereas rice reserves by year-end ideally between 2 million tons to 2.5 million tons. The government's rice reserve is targeted to approximately 300,000 to 350,000 tonnes.
"The last position CBP I do not know exactly. But the government was asked to prepare the money, if needed additional CBP, "said Adi.
Estimated funding needs to increase rice reserves until the end of the year amounted to IDR 3 trillion. He said that the provision of these funds is to anticipate the rice production at beginning of the year, which is expected to drop due to El Nino.
Meanwhile, the ministry that handles about the production, the Ministry of Agriculture, is still optimistic that rice production this year is still insufficient and can be absorbed by Bulog, although there are scenarios el nino from moderate to strong. (Kompas)
