Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Sofyan Djalil, said the government will assess whether there will be or not to import rice for the period December 2015 to early 2016.
This is due to the government's plan to import food, because of the El Nino storms. It is feared, the storm will have an impact of drought on some paddy fields in Indonesia which led to the level of food production decline.
"For the end of the year, we will be meeting first, want to import or not. This week we will be meeting," the minister said in his office, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 4, 2015.
Earlier, former Minister of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the domestic rice supply ensures safe during periods of El Nino, in October to November 2015.
About the food what will be imported by the government, he said, the main focus is currently only rice. Therefore, rice is a type of food consumed by people everyday.
El Nino is allegedly still going to happen in some parts of Indonesia. The impact of the annual cycle is expected to create more than 111 thousand hectares of agricultural land crop failure. (Viva.co.id)
